Dry, flaky skin? How to have beautiful, dewy skin

          During the summer months, skin can get dry, itchy, and flaky. It's never nice to put on your makeup or put on a cute skirt and feel and see dry patches like the dry soil of the Sahara Desert all over your skin.

          Like in my previous post about how to combat oily skin, I have compiled together a list of do's and don'ts in "The Ten Dry Commandments" that will send you on your way to dewy, moisturized and fresh looking skin. 

THE TEN DRY COMMANDMENTS
1.) THOU SHALT NOT TAKE RIDICULOUSLY HOT SHOWERS: I hate this rule with a fiery passion because there is nothing more in this world that I adore more than a hot, lava-like shower. But, taking piping hot showers is super drying for the skin. Hot showers (and also excessive bathing) strips the essential, natural oils from your skin. Showers should be taken warm and not any longer than 10 to 15 minutes in order to prevent dry skin.
2.) THOU SHALT NOT USE A HEAVILY SCENTED SOAP OR CLEANSER- Anything heavily scented 9 times out of 10 has harsh chemicals which will dry out your skin like crazy. Go for fragrance-free, mild soaps and cleansers. Right now, I am using Clinique Liquid Facial Soap
3.) THOU SHALT MOISTURIZE RIGHT AFTER SHOWERING- The warmth from your shower opens up your pores and so moisturizing right after you shower ensures that the moisture seeps deeper into your pores. Also, it is good to leave your skin slightly wet after your shower so that your moisturizer will lock in the water and moisture from your shower. Moisturizers with olive, cocoa, or shea butter are the best. My absolute favorite moisturizer which can be used on the face and all over the face and body is the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. Seriously. This is the BEST moisturizer I have ever used in my life. I used to have really dry skin and this completely changed my skin. I would only recommend it if your skin is especially dry. Now that my skin is normal to combination, I only use this during the winter months or when I have sun burn or wind burn. 
4.) THOU SHALT USE BABY OIL IN THE SHOWER BEFORE YOU DRY OFF- This will soak into your skin and replace the oils you are lacking. I don't recommend this for your face, but for your legs and arms. When you get out of the shower your legs will look super hydrated, shiny and healthy.  Johnson's Baby Oil is a good product to use.
5.) THOU SHALT USE AN SPF IN THY MOISTURIZER/FOUNDATION- This will protect your face from the drying effects and damage from the sun. The moisturizer I listed above also has a great SPF  in it but a great facial sunblock is Neutrogena Age Shield Face (ranges from low SPF to high SPF)
6.) THOU SHALT USE A HYDRATING FACE MASK- Used once a week, this will replenish the moisture in your skin and you will notice that your face is noticeably less dry throughout the week. I haven't found a holy grail moisturizing mask yet, so I like to switch around a lot. 
7.) THOU SHALT DRINK TONS OF WATER AND EAT VEGGIES- If your skin is dry and dehydrated, so are you. Drinking water enables your skin to produce more moisture. If you have a hard time drinking water throughout the day, try to eat lots of veggies which have a lot of water and vitamin content in them.
8.) THOU SHALT NOT CONSUME TOO MUCH ALCOHOL- I added "too much" because I don't think cutting out alcohol completely is realistic for most people (especially if you are a college student!) So everything in moderation but just don't go too crazy with it because alcohol is super drying, aging, and really, really wears out the skin. 
9.) THOU SHALT NOT USE SCENTED FABRIC DETERGENTS- Scented fabric detergents can make your skin super dry and itchy because of all the chemicals. It's best to stick with unscented detergents. Tide Free and Gentle is a good detergent to use.
10.) THOU SHALT USE A GENTLE FACE/BODY SCRUB- This won't prevent dry skin, but it will help to undo the damage that is already done. Use a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week to buff away any flaky, dry patches you have. This will unveil the newer, healthier skin underneath. Your face and body will feel really soft and beautiful as well. For my face, I love to use Origins Modern Friction
*NOTE*-- Some illnesses like dehydration, kidney disease, and diabetes can cause dry skin, so if your dry skin is very extreme or persists over a long period of time you should visit your doctor. If illness is not the case, you should visit your dermatologist and he will be able to prescribe you special remedies for dry skin.
