Cold-ish weather (I live in Florida so my bodily cold-o-meter is obviously broken) means I've put aside matte formulas for the moment. Although I have oily skin, the winter weather never fails to sap out any moisture my skin possesses--and matte formulas tend to highlight the appearance of dry skin. Light to medium coverage foundations with a skin-like sheen have been my rock during the month of January.
Regardless of the season, I almost always choose to wear drugstore products during the day and my high end, fancy-shmancy products if I'm going out for dinner or some sort of night event. I have it in my mind that this is somehow more cost-effective because I use up my more expensive products much more slowly this way and "save them for when it counts" so to speak. Day time makeup is usually much lighter for me. With a new born baby, I'm lucky if I can throw on foundation, mascara and some blush most days. I love drugstore makeup and think it's definitely come a long way in the last few years so I enjoy switching it up with both drugstore and high end makeup.
For the most part, this is the base I've been throwing on my face for the month of January:
THE JANUARY DAILY BASE:
Maybelline Baby Skin Primer- a light primer that fills in pores and smooths the skin, and makes makeup last longer. This is a great drugstore dupe for the Benefit Porefessional Primer.
L'Oreal True Match Foundation- a medium foundation with a nice skin-like sheen. A great dupe for the Makeup Forever HD foundation I use at night.
Revlon PhotoReady Concealer- A thick stick concealer that's great for covering dark circles and pimples.
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural- A gorgeous setting powder that offers extra coverage and makes pores and fine lines much less noticeable.
THE JANUARY NIGHTLY BASE:
Hourglass Primer- The best primer I have ever, ever used hands down. It goes on like silk, vanishes pores, lays a smooth base for your foundation to go over, and puts the lock down on your makeup. Expensive but you get what you pay for with this one!
Makeup Forever HD Foundation- These foundations were originally formulated for HD television and perfects the skin beautifully without a caked on or thick appearance. Its a buildable medium coverage with a gorgeous skin-like sheen. It films and photographs like a dream.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer- A new holy grail worthy concealer that covers dark circles wonderfully and doesn't crease in the under eye area.
Ben Nye Luxury Powder in "Cameo"- A lovely, finely milled setting powder for the under eye area (or even spots that get particularly oily). This is an extra step I do to make sure my concealer stays put and doesn't crease all night.
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural- (see description under "daily" section) I use this powder for both day and night since I haven't found a drugstore dupe yet.
To apply both my day and night bases, I use a flat top kabuki brush by Sigma (the F80 brush) and a damp beauty blender or my fingers to blend out the concealer. I love how seamless and almost airbrushed the base looks after I have used this method of blending together. I like to finish my day and night bases with bronzer and blush etc. Like I said above, I've been keeping it pretty minimal during the day and usually pay much more attention to detail at night with a lot more products.
What has been your base for the month of January?
